The Closet Thinker: parka life

Justine Picardie on why Brit girls love a parka.

Whatever else may shift in the slippery lexicon of fashion (hemlines, for a start), P is almost always for parka.

Witness John Galliano's latest ready-to-wear show for Dior, when the first model walked on to the runway wearing a white parka over a bright silk dress, or the Jil Sander spring/summer 2011 collection, which featured a navy parka teamed with a strapless taffeta evening gown, alongside T-shirts with sweeping long skirts.

Putting a parka over a frock is a way of suggesting chic nonchalance - a blend of dressing up with dressing down - which the British have turned into a fine art.

As it happens, the parka started out as a US military essential, to keep airmen warm; but it was absorbed into English popular culture when Mods made army-surplus jackets an integral part of their uniform in the 1960s.

By the time I started wearing a parka as a teenager in the late 1970s, punks had joined the search for vintage khaki: we scoured Camden market and Laurence Corner on the Euston Road (a legendary establishment that served everyone from Keith Moon to Kate Moss).

Since then, my original parkas have gone astray - lost in the distant recesses of a briefly wild youth - and I rely on a much-loved, well-worn cotton one by Gap, weathered and faded after seven years of use.

But it's beginning to fray, and I'm hankering after a new one, although not at designer prices, now so high that they seem simply extravagant, rather than beautifully simple (£815 for a silk-twill version by Phillip Lim, £2,975 for a bead-embellished Valentino, for which you could buy two dozen authentic 1951 fishtail parkas, the most-prized of Mod collectibles).

Instead, I'm going to invest in a Whistles design for £150, inspired by Jane Shepherdson, who has always worn excellent parkas, ever since I first met her, two decades ago. Formerly brand director of Topshop, she is now CEO of Whistles, and her expert advice is as follows: 'The perfect parka is such a classic that it genuinely doesn't seem to go out of fashion, and gives an outfit just the right amount of irreverence to make it cool instead of trying too hard.

It shouldn't be so big that it looks ridiculous, but roomy enough to wear on top of another layer in the winter. I love a parka with a stripy top and a sheepskin gilet - but I'm as happy to slip it over an evening dress.'

In the alphabet of what to wear, and how to wear it, that's about as easy as it gets…

Why Most Wrinkle Creams Are a Waste of Money

Many skincare companies make huge profits selling anti-aging creams that boast powerful and expensive ingredients. Well-known anti-aging ingredients like retinol, alpha-hydroxy acids, and hyaluronic acid may all be beneficial to your skin, but only if they can penetrate into the deeper layers of the epidermis.

What skincare companies don’t want you to know is that many of these ingredients are often rendered useless and ineffective because of the delivery system used.

Why does this happen? Most anti-aging products contain ingredient molecules that are too large to penetrate the superficial layers of the skin. They simply sit on the skin’s surface, with little reparative effect, and wash away the moment you wash your face.

But a new technology is changing the way ingredients are delivered for better results, and right now it’s only found in one skincare line.

iQ Derma with Exclusive T-SFERE™ Technology

California skincare company, iQ Derma, sought to improve the effects of anti-aging ingredients by focusing on the way ingredients are delivered into the skin. T-SFERE Technology, a unique and patent-pending delivery system, has the ability to encapsulate multi-functional ingredients into single microscopic spheres, penetrating 2x deeper than ordinary skin care.

Increased absorption means ingredients go to work where they are most effective in fighting the root causes of skin aging. In a clinical study, T-SFERE Technology penetrated 4 layers of the epidermis within 60 minutes, while the control substance only penetrated 2 layers.

High Concentrations of Active Ingredients

Each product in the line contains over 50% active anti-aging ingredients—that’s over 10x the industry average of about 3%. And with T-SFERE Technology, these powerful ingredients are placed exactly where they need to be for real results:

Rough skin texture - 89% saw improvement in skin texture

Loose, sagging skin - 77% saw firmer-looking skin

Loss of radiance - 71% saw more luminous skin

Dry skin - 74% experienced an improvement in skin moisturization

Lines and wrinkles - 71% saw a reduction in wrinkle appearance

Under-eye puffiness - 77% saw improvement in under-eye puffiness

(Results based on a 6-week clinical study of iQ Derma with T-SFERE Technology)

As a result, iQ Derma with T-SFERE Technology effectively addresses a broader range of age-related issues, from dark spots and discoloration, to redness and enlarged pores—things Botox® and fillers can’t even correct.

And right now, iQ Derma’s Ageless Face System with T-SFERE Technology is being offered at a highly discounted rate of 78% off, which is only available through DermStore.com.

Treat bags for Halloween.

ghost treat bags

I’m in love with these cute ghost treat bags for Halloween.? I know we’re down to the wire with time, but I had to share these with you before next year.? Little ghostie sacks filled with treats.

halloween treat bags

Supplies for Halloween Treat Bags:

white paper sacksgoogly eyesgluehole punchscissorsribbonHalloween candy or other treats

paper bags

Step 1:

Cut the paper bag to the shape of a ghost.? Trim off the top of the bag in the shape of a semi-circle.? Cut off as much or as little as you’d like, this is your rodeo.

hole puncher

Step 2:

Punch holes as far down as you can make your hole puncher go.? You don’t want these ripping up to the top of the bag when you add your ribbon.? Place the holes about 2″ or 3″ inches apart.

elmer's glue

Step 3:

This is where it gets crazy {not really}.? Glue your googly eyes onto the sack right underneath the holes you just punched.? Glue big ones, small ones, mismatched ones, crooked ones, you decide.

google eyes

Aren’t they cute?? The ghost looks so innocent without a mouth and nose.

Looks can be deceiving.

halloween treats

Step 4:

Fill ‘er up.? Now’s the time to add treats.? Put in candy, popcorn, granola bars {I’m trying to add a healthy option here, you see that?}, whatever your sweet little heart desires.

black ribbon

Step 5:

We’re adding the ribbon now. This part is a little tricky if you have wider ribbon like I did.? If you have skinny little ribbon you’re golden.

Pinch the ribbon in half and carefully squeeze it through the holes you just punched.

grosgrain ribbon

Carefully thread it through the back on one side, and then the other, until you have this:

threading

Step 6:

Now tie a knot.

ghost bag

If you have extra ends, trim them down until your bow is even.

It’s super easy, swearsies.

ghost craft

Your ghost is done!

Now repeat until you have as many ghost treat bags as you need for whatever party you’re throwing.

ghost treat bags

Are you kidding me with this?? Cutest ghosts in the history of Halloween.
